Awesome Video!!

The other week me and my housemates were watching TV when Rude Tube came on E4. It was an episode on all the best virals around and the one I'm about to post really caught my eye. It was really up my street and I just thought it was incredibly clever. Here it is, enjoy;

The Ongoing Saga Of Draping!

Last week we started our drapery project and it was a killer! I knew I was going to struggle with drapery anyway because I love flat pattern cutting and sportswear - neither of these things really go hand in hand with drapery.

I was going to use the Vivienne Westwood dress as a starting point because I thought that it was the best dress to get inspiration from and it was a good base to make changes to. I started to do the standard pretty draped dresses and as much as I liked what I was coming up with I just wasn't in love with it. Here are some of my favourite designs I came up with though;
This dress reminds me of a Roman Toga, I really like the top half because I think it is very flattering.I really did like this draping but I think it would of been very limited for options on the bottom half.

Towards the end of the day though I felt really defeated so left it and decided to come back the next day with fresh ideas. The next day was a lot better for me and I did lots of different techniques and started to produce work that was more up my street.

Here are some pictures of my final piece of work; As you can tell from my original image it is very different, but I was really pleased with the overall project as I never thought it was possible to mix sportswear and drapery. I managed to pleat and drape a massive hood and turn gathers into pockets.

PPRD: Current Issues, Dispatches: Fashion's Dirty Secret

On the 8th November 2010, Channel 4 aired a programme entitled "Dispatches: Fashion's Dirty Secret" it exposes practices that you would think commonly go on in third world countries, sweatshops! but these sweatshops that they showed were in ENGLAND! Workers were being paid roughly £2.50 per hour, working long hours and in cramped conditions.

I highly recommend that everyone should watch this program as it will open your eyes to the nasty side of the fashion industry that we don't commonly see, below I have included the link:

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/dispatches/episode-guide/series-75/episode-1

This program really made me angry, I think that we deserve to know where our clothes are made and what the conditions are like. It's a catch 22 for the employees because as much as they are angry about the conditions and pay they cannot say anything about it because half of them do not have Visas! This is definitely an issue that affects everyone, not just fashion students. We need to find the balance between production cost and workers conditions, does our need for cheap, cheerful and fast fashion really mean that we should use sweatshops in order to keep productions costs down? Or do we just play ignorant to what is going on?

Something needs to change.

Last Girl On Earth Tour!

On the 7th May 2010 me and my friend, Anais, went to see Rihanna at the LG Arena in Birmingham - it was amazing, she absolutely KILLED it! We managed to get pretty much right near the front (we get lucky like that) so had a great view which was good as there was so much to see.

The stylists, Mariel Haenn and Robert Zangardi, did an amazing job throughout the concert with some incredible costume changes. Here are some of my favourites;

This outfit is so beautiful, she donned the Mickey Mouse helmet later and sung her hit song "Hard" - It was so feminine but really packed a punch.
At first I thought this outfit was, like most of them, really daring but it was in fact an all in one!! It really flattered her figure and Rihanna really rocked out in it. I've included this because I love the set, it is a massive gun that came down from the ceiling and the dancers were dancing through it, it was so captivating. Rihanna used this set piece to perform her song "Te Amo"
This outfit was her last costume change, it remind me very much of Gareth Pugh's work - very structured. It was amazing just as it was but this outfit had one last hidden trick up it's sleeve....
Yes!! the sleeves had inflatable striped balls in them! It was incredible and you didn't expect it at all.
Overall this was one of the best concerts I have been to and would definitely recommend everyone needs to see Rihanna live at least once! She sings live, dances (her famous butterfly dance) and really puts on a show! even playing the drums!! What a talented fashion icon!!

Rihanna is definitely a fashion icon because she isn't afraid to be herself which is really inspiring as no one should be afraid to act like themselves because they are worried what people will say or think.

Fresh Start!

With my serious lack of blogging over the Summer I have decided to start a new, fresh blog that fingers crossed I will update regularly!

I am aiming to get a better mark for PPRD this year compared to last year so I need to try a lot harder and put more effort in but not only in PPRD but in uni in general. It's technically my last year of my degree so it's time to buck my ideas up.

Good Luck!
